Unique Places and Things To Do When in Syria

As one of the oldest countries in the world, Syria is filled with historical wonders that are on every cultural traveller’s bucket list. Today, travelling through Syria feels like stepping into the crossroads of the past and the future.

Damascus

Welcome to the world’s oldest continuously inhabited capital city. Here you’ll wander through the vibrant Al-Hamidiyah Souk, admire stunning Ottoman and Umayyad architecture, and lose yourself in the winding alleys of the Old City – a place where history is visible at every turn.

The historic centre proudly reflects the centuries of civilization, with Hellenistic, Byzantine, Islamic, and Roman influences integrated throughout its covered souks and traditional hammams. Highlights include the Citadel of Damascus, a medieval fortress with impressive towers, and the famous Straight Street, a 1,500 meter Roman road that still follows its original path.

Palmyra

Also known as the Pearl of the Desert, Palmyra remains one of Syria’s most iconic historical sites. Despite damage from the war, the towering columns still stand as a powerful glimpse into this once legendary caravan city that connected the Roman Empire with Persia and beyond.

Once a thriving trade hub along ancient routes, Palmyra was famous for its grand colonnades, temples, and monumental arches set against the vast desert landscape. Today, it continues to symbolise Syria’s rich history, attracting those from all around the world

Krak des Chevaliers

This is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the world – a site that needs no introduction. Its massive walls, strategic hilltop location, and remarkably intact structure make it a highlight for any visitor.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Krak de Chevaliers was originally a stronghold of the Knights Hospitaller and played a key role during the Crusades. Its design reflects the importance of defense at the time, with layered fortifications built to withstand long sieges. In fact, the castle was only captured after a 36-day siege through deception rather than force.

Bosra Old City

This UNESCO-listed site is home to one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in existence. Built from black basalt and seating up to 15,000 people, the theatre and surrounding ancient city offer a fascinating look into Syria’s Roman past.

Once a prosperous provincial hub during the Roman era, Bosra is now an important archaeological site with layers of history spanning multiple civilizations. Beyond its impressive theatre, visitors can explore early Christian churches and the historic Al-Omari Mosque, one of the oldest surviving mosques in Islamic history.

Aleppo

Known as one of the most heavily damaged cities in the war, Aleppo is where the remains of citadels, souks, and ancient churches reveal stories from every era. Today, parts of the city are gradually rebuilding, and visiting Aleppo means meeting locals determined to revive their beloved city.

At the same time, Aleppo is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements, with history dating back to the sixth millennium BCE. It once served as a key hub on the historic Silk Road, connecting trade routes between the East and the West.

Highlights include the vast Al-Madina Souk, one of the largest covered markets in the world, as well as numerous mosques, churches, and traditional hammams.
