Itinerary

Saturday 13 March – Kigali (Rwanda) – Queen Elisabeth National Park (Uganda)

Upon arrival at the airport in Kigali, Rwanda, you’ll be welcomed by your guide.
Or: join the tour after completing our Rwanda Highlights Tour.

We leave Kigali early in the morning and drive north towards neighbouring Uganda. Along the way, we’ll enjoy Rwanda’s beautiful rolling hills, vibrant villages and rural landscapes before completing the border formalities and entering the “Pearl of Africa.”

Our first stop is the stunning Lake Bunyonyi, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most beautiful lakes. Surrounded by terraced hills and dotted with dozens of small islands, the lake provides a peaceful setting for a relaxing boat excursion while we learn about its fascinating history and local legends.

In the afternoon, we continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s premier safari destinations and the country’s most biodiverse national park. As we descend from the highlands into the savannah, the scenery changes dramatically, offering a wonderful introduction to Uganda’s rich landscapes and wildlife.

Sunday 14 March – Queen Elizabeth National Park

Travellers who have booked the optional Mountain Gorilla Trek (at an additional cost) depart early for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Accompanied by experienced rangers, they set off on an unforgettable trek through the rainforest in search of one of the habituated gorilla families.

For the rest of the group, today is dedicated to exploring Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most diverse national park. The highlight is an early morning game drive, when wildlife is at its most active. Depending on luck, we may encounter elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, warthogs and, if fortune is on our side, even lions or leopards.

Later, we visit a nearby community to learn more about daily life alongside the national park before enjoying a boat safari on the famous Kazinga Channel. This natural waterway, connecting Lake George and Lake Edward, is renowned for its exceptionally high concentration of hippos, Nile crocodiles and waterbirds, while elephants and buffaloes are frequently seen along its shores.

In the late afternoon, we head out for another game drive, offering one final opportunity to spot some of the park’s remarkable wildlife.

Monday 15 March – Queen Elisabeth National Park – Kampala

This morning, the highlight is a guided trek through the spectacular Kyambura Gorge, often referred to as the “Valley of Apes.” Hidden beneath the surrounding savannah, this lush rainforest is home to one of Uganda’s habituated chimpanzee communities. Accompanied by experienced rangers, we’ll descend into the gorge in search of these fascinating primates while learning about their behaviour and the unique ecosystem they inhabit. Although sightings can never be guaranteed, we have a good chance of encountering them in the wild.

After the trek, we begin our journey back to Kampala. Along the way, we stop at the famous Equator Monument, where you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere before continuing to the Ugandan capital.

Overnight stay at a hotel in Kampala.

Tuesday 16 March – Kampala

Today we explore Kampala, Uganda’s lively capital, where modern city life blends with the rich traditions of the Buganda Kingdom. Depending on the time available, our city tour includes several of the city’s most important landmarks.

We visit the impressive Uganda National Mosque, better known as the Gaddafi Mosque, whose towering minaret offers spectacular views over Kampala. We also explore the Kasubi Royal Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the spiritual resting place of the Buganda kings, providing a fascinating introduction to Uganda’s royal history and traditional architecture.

Another stop is the Kabaka’s Palace, the official palace of the King of Buganda. Nearby are the infamous underground torture chambers, used during the dictatorship of Idi Amin, offering a sobering insight into Uganda’s recent history.

If time permits, we also visit Wakaliwood, Uganda’s legendary low-budget film studio that has gained a worldwide cult following thanks to its action-packed productions and remarkable creativity.

In the evening, we gather for a farewell dinner to celebrate the end of our Ugandan adventure.
