Each travel destination has secrets waiting to be revealed to those who are curious to come and listen. For Xavi, one of our cherished guides at CultureRoad, there is one place in particular that defied all expectations and captured his imagination. While you may know Xavi for his love for Syria and his impressively fluent Arabic, the destination we’re speaking about is, in fact, Iran

A World of Beauty and Diversity

For Xavi, Iran isn’t just a destination; it’s a vibrant mix of cultures and languages that feels like stepping into an entirely different world. He is amazed by Iran’s diversity, noting that different ethnic groups and traditions coexist much more harmoniously than portrayed in the media. Iranian people really take pride in their surroundings, this shows in how clean their public spaces are, and this sense of respect permeates every part of their culture.

Iranian really people take pride in their surroundings, which is evident in how clean their public spaces are. This sense of respect permeates every part of their culture, making it a fascinating culture to experience and learn from. Luckily, locals are very hospitable and very happy to see foreign visitors! If you are lucky enough to visit Iran, you will witness and experience acts of generosity every single day.

Xavi is fascinated by the Persian language and its deeply engrained tradition of poetry. Poetry is widely beloved and integrated into daily Iranian life, holding a special place in people’s hearts. Iran is also famous for its beautiful architecture, calligraphy, pottery, and textiles.

Xavi’s Most Memorable Moment

Iran became truly special to Xavi when he learned the language, opening doors to deeper human connections. He recalls a memorable experience in Tehran that shows the extraordinary kindness of the Iranian people.

While trying to rent a city bike, Xavi discovered that sanctions meant his foreign credit card wouldn’t work. He decided to ask strangers to use their cards to pay for the city bike and pay them back in cash. A kind couple helped him but refused to accept his cash and insisted he come to their house for dinner. They cycled through the city together, had dinner together and then, refusing to let Xavi pay for a hotel, they hosted him for three nights! “Their hospitality is unparalleled,” Xavi says about Iranians. “Acts of generosity like this happen daily in Iran.”

What Kind of Traveller Would Most Enjoy Iran?

  • Art and design lovers – From intricately tiled mosques to breathtaking Persian rugs, Iran offers a wealth of craftsmanship for those who appreciate the arts.
  • Poetry lovers – In Iran, poetry isn’t just an art form but a way of life. Literature lovers will be enchanted by the works of Iran’s many poets.
  • Foodies – Iranian cuisine is a journey of flavours, with dishes like saffron-infused stews, crispy tahdig, and aromatic kebabs.
  • History buffs – With a history stretching back thousands of years, Iran is a treasure trove of ancient ruins, historic cities, and stories of the past.
  • Anyone willing to challenge narratives – Travellers with an open mind who have the curiosity to challenge social and political preconceptions.

Xavi’s Iran Travel Tips

  • Learn some Persian – Learning a few basics in Persian will be sure to make you a favourite amongst the hospitable Iranians you will encounter.
  • Learn Poetry – If you want to go a step further than learning ‘hello’, ‘please’, and ‘thank you’, learning to recite an Iranian poem will go a long way in connecting to the locals! If you don’t know where to start looking, check out the works of Hafez, Saadi Shirazi, and Omar Khayyam (just to name a few).
  • Immerse yourself in the cuisine – Make sure to dedicate some time to learn about the local ingredients and cooking methods. Food is always a great way to learn about a culture. Plus, you’ll get to impress your friends back home with a great meal you learnt on your travels! Xavi’s favourite dish is kofta tabrizi, a meatball dish most enjoyed in the north west of Iran.
  • The best time to travel to Iran – The best time to go is in Spring and Autumn due to the weather. South Iran is also lovely in the winter, but the north will be very cold. Luckily, we’ve planned our Iran group tours at the best times – in March and November.
  • Visit the Kurdish region of Iran – Xavi’s favourite region of Iran is the Kurdish region. The amazing natural beauty and fascinating culture make for a beautiful and authentic experience.
  • Check out the Hezar-def Festival – Meaning ‘one thousand drums’, this vibrant festival brings together Kurdish communities to honour their rich cultural heritage. Plan a private tour in April to enjoy the traditional daf drum performances and folk dances! This festival is a special opportunity to witness the strong identity and unity among the Kurdish people.
  • Travel respectfully – Xavi advises travelers to approach Iran with an open mind and a willingness to listen and learn. Respecting local customs, such as modest dress and learning a few basic Persian phrases can go a long way in fostering genuine connections.

Iran – an Authentic Destination

Iran still maintains much of its authenticity. If there’s one thing Xavi hopes will be preserved for future generations, it’s Iran’s culture of poetry and its hospitality. These elements define the spirit of the nation and offer lessons in kindness, generosity, and finding the beauty of human connection and life.

Iran is perfect for the curious travellers – those who seek to challenge narratives, immerse themselves in history, and embrace the unexpected. Ready to explore Iran? Check out our group tours and private tours to this unforgettable country.
