Afghanistan Introduces E-Visa System (March 2026)

Travelling to Afghanistan just became more accessible! In March 2026 they launched a new e-visa system, making the tourist visa process significantly more accessible than before. Travellers can now apply online, removing the need to visit an embassy or apply from a third country.

For a destination that has traditionally required lengthy and complex visa arrangements, this marks a notable and welcome change.

What has Changed?

Previously, obtaining a visa for Afghanistan often meant applying through embassies in cities like Dubai or Islamabad, sometimes combined with extra requirements such as a Letter of Invitation (LOI). With the introduction of the new e-visa system, the process is much more straightforward:

  • Applications are completed entirely online
  • No embassy visits are required
  • Visas are issued digitally and can be printed out before travel

How to Apply for an Afghanistan E-Visa?

Applying is straightforward, and can be done entirely online:

  1. Complete the online application form, which can be found here
  2. Upload a copy of your passport and a recent passport-style photo (in some cases, a Letter of Invitation (LOI) may be requested)
  3. Fill in your travel details which we will provide once you book a tour with us
    • Address in Afghanistan
    • Sponsor details (name, phone number, and address)
  4. Pay a small initial processing fee of USD $ 8.25
  5. Wait for approval via e-mail
  6. Pay the USD $ 120 visa fee via the link in your email
  7. Download and print the e-visa
  8. Make sure you carry a printed copy of the visa when entering the country

What are the E-Visa Requirements?

The current e-visa system includes the following conditions:

  • Processing time: around 1 to 3 weeks
  • Validity: entry within 90 days of approval
  • Length of stay: up to 30 days
  • Cost: approximately USD $ 120 – 130

Do You Still Need a Letter of Invitation (LOI)?

One of the biggest changes is that the Letter of Invitation is no longer always required. While it was previously required in most cases, travellers have reported successful e-visa applications without one. For organised tours, an LOI may still be included to ensure a smooth process.

Where Can You Enter with the Afghanistan E-Visa?

At present, the e-visa is mainly valid for entry via Kabul International Airport. There is still limited clarity around land border crossings, so travellers planning overland routes should check for updates before departure.

What This Means for Travellers

Afghanistan’s new e-visa system removes one of the main barriers that previously made travel more complicated. While the system is still developing, it’s now significantly easier to plan a trip than it was just a few years ago. For travellers considering Afghanistan, this change makes the destination more accesible, without changing what makes it so unique.
