Travel to Burundi? Maybe you’ll need to Google it. And that’s exactly why it’s such a refreshing travel destination. No crowds of tourists, no cliché safaris. Just an authentic experience in one of the least explored countries in Africa. Think: green mountains, deep lakes, cheerful people, and a culture that truly comes alive.

A small country with a big story, that’s Burundi in a nutshell. Located between Rwanda, Tanzania, and Congo, along the stunning Tanganyika Lake. The best part? Everything is close by. You don’t have to drive for hours to get from the jungle to a waterfall or the beach. In just a few days, you can drive from the mysterious jungle of Kibira National Park, past the impressive Karera Waterfalls, to the tranquility of Tanganyika Lake. Bonus: along the way, you’ll probably encounter more cows than tourists

Bujumbura

The capital, Bujumbura, is the heart of the Burundi to travel to. Chaotic, colorful, lively, yet surprisingly laid-back. Picture yourself enjoying a cold beer on the shore of Tanganyika Lake, visiting a local market, and then grabbing a plate of freshly grilled fish. Yes, that’s also Bujumbura.

Rusizi National Park

For nature lovers, Rusizi National Park is a true gem. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, from majestic hippos to a wide range of bird species. With its lush landscapes and peaceful rivers, it’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Burundi. A boat trip along the Rusizi River offers a unique chance to experience the surroundings up close!

Gishora Drummers: Rhythm with Goosebump Guarantee

If there’s one thing you must experience while travelling to Burundi, it’s the Gishora Drummers. This isn’t just a show, it’s rhythm, history, and energy all in one. The drums echo, the dancers leap, and you can feel the ground vibrating beneath you. These performances are deeply rooted in Burundian culture, once reserved for royal ceremonies. Now, they are accessible to travelers, but always with respect and pride.

Handy to Know

Best Time to Visit: The best time to travel to Burundi is from February and May to August for sunny weather, with pleasant temperatures and little rain. But overall, temperatures are mild year-round, ranging from 16°C to 30°C. The climate varies by region: tropical near Tanganyika Lake, temperate on the central plateau, and cooler in the highlands.

Language: French is the official language, but especially in Bujumbura, you’ll get by with English. The younger generation often speaks it surprisingly well, so even if you’re not fluent in French, there’s no need to worry.

Food: Vegetarian or vegan? No problem! In Bujumbura, you’ll easily find fresh avocados, Indian food, cheese toast, and refreshing juices. Outside the city, the cuisine is simpler, but with a bit of creativity, you can make it work.

Safety: Burundi is generally a safe country for tourists, especially if you respect local customs. However, it’s always a good idea to check the latest safety advice before you go. If you’ve booked with us, we’ll keep you updated on any changes in the situation. And, as always, it’s important to be cautious in busy areas and stay aware of your surroundings. In the city, it’s fine to walk around, but outside the city, it’s wise to have a guide with you, especially if you’re visiting nature parks.
