Itinerary

Friday 17 February – Beirut (Lebanon) – Damascus

  • 8:30 AM – Meet the group and departure to Damascus from Beirut.
  • Lebanon / Syria border crossing.
  • Drive to Damascus, the capital of Syria.
  • Via Straight Street we walk to the House Chapel of Ananias. He was one of the first Christians in Syria.
  • Highlight: The Great Mosque, also known as the Omajaden Mosque.
  • See the famous Al Hamidieh Grand Bazaar (also known as the Al-Hamidiyah Souk). The perfect place to get acquainted with daily life in Damascus.
  • Walk through the old centre of Damascus.
  • Overnight stay in Damascus.

Saturday 18 February – Damascus – Maaloula – Mishtaya

  • We drive to Maaloula. A beautiful village against the mountains. Here the language of Christ is still spoken (Aramaic).
  • We take a look at the famous monasteries Mar Sarkis and Mar Taqla.
  • Drive to Krak des Chevaliers.
  • Highlight: Visit to Krak des Chevaliers. This famous castle is the symbol of the Crusades and was the base for the Hospitallers.
  • Drive to Mishtaya, up in the mountains.
  • Have a winetasting with a local family.
  • Overnight stay in homestays in Mishtaya.

Sunday 19 February – Damascus – Homs – Palmyra – Hama

  • Drive to Homs.
  • Walking tour through Homs. We will see the neighbourhood that was completely damaged by the war. But we’ll also visit the new souk of Homs.
  • Drive to Palmyra. Although IS has destroyed much here, there is still a lot to see.
  • Highlight: We see the remains of the Temple of Bel, the Triumphal Arch, the colonnades, the theatre, the agora and the tombs.
  • Drive to Hama.
  • Overnight stay in Hama.

Monday 20 February – Hama – Aleppo

  • Visit to the famous waterwheels in the Orontos River.
  • Drive to Aleppo. It was the largest city in the country and since the civil war it is the second largest city in the country.
  • Short walk through the centre of Aleppo.
  • Overnight stay in Aleppo.

Tuesday 21 February – Aleppo – Damascus

  • City tour of Aleppo, one of the oldest cities in the world still inhabited.
  • Highlight: Visit to the well-known Aleppo Citadel. A medieval fortress in the middle of the city.
  • Walk through the old covered souk. It is still being renovated.
  • Visit the Al Jdeideh district, one of the most famous neighbourhoods of the city.
  • Drive to Damascus.
  • Overnight stay in Damascus

Wednesday 22 February – Damascus – Bosra

  • Drive to Bosra.
  • Highlight: Arrival in Bosra, after which we go to the Roman Amphitheatre. A 45m long and 8,5m deep theatre that is remarkably well preserved.
  • Walk through the old centre of Bosra, with e.g. the cathedral and the basilica.
  • Drive to Damascus.
  • Overnight stay in Damascus.

Thursday 23 February – Damascus – Golan Height – Beirut (Lebanon)

  • Morning visit to Azm Palace, an 18th century palace located in the old centre of the city.
  • Group A: Drive to the border with Lebanon, border crossing Syria / Lebanon, drive to Beirut and end of the tour.
  • Group B: stay in Damascus with time to explore the old town by yourself.
  • Thursday night is a big night in Damascus, we’ll explore the local nightlife.
  • Overnight stay in Damascus.

Friday 24 February – Beirut (Lebanon) – Damascus

  • National Museum of Syria.
  • Visit Bimaristan an-Nuri and Khan As’ad Pasha, an old caravanserai.
  • Overnight in Damascus.

Saturday 25 February – Maaloula – Mishtaya

  • We will drive into the mountains of Syria, close to Homs.
  • We will stay in the village of Mishtaya. Here you can wander around and see what rural life is in Syria.
  • Wine and rakia tasting on a farm.
  • Overnight stay with a local family.

Sunday 26 February – Mishtaya – Tartous – Latakia    

  • We say goodbye to the family and continue towards the coast.
  • Arrival in the city of Tartous, with a small city tour.
  • Boat ride to Arwad Island. A unique visit, as it has seen barely any tourists since the re-opening of Syria.
  • Upon return in Tartous we will drive to Latakia.
  • Overnight stay in Latakia.

Monday 27 February – Latakia – Hama      

  • Walk around Latakia and enjoy the view of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Visit to the Tomb of Hafez Al-Assad, up in the mountains around Latakia.
  • Drive to Hama.
  • Overnight stay in Hama.

Tuesday 28 February – Hama – Damascus     

  • Visit to the famous Beehive Houses in Al Shikh Helal. For many years this used to be one of the main tourist attractions of the country.
  • Drive to Damascus.
  • Visit the October War Museum to learn more about the conflict with Israel.
  • Overnight stay in Damascus

Wednesday 1 March – Damascus     

  • Drive towards the Golan Height, and more precisely the city of Al Qunaitera. This city was heavily damaged during the war in 1973.
  • We will make a tour to the hill from where we have a view on the Israel city of Majdal Shams.
  • Return to Damascus.
  • Optional visit to the hammam. A truly unique experience in Syria. Men and women are separated, but our guides will make sure everything will be organized.
  • Overnight in Damascus

Thursday 2 March – Damascus

  • Drive to the border with Lebanon
  • Border crossing Syria / Lebanon.
  • Drive to Beirut.
  • End of tour.
