Itinerary
Day 1 – Erbil
- Airport pick up in Erbil.
- Exchange money on the local market (if necessary).
- Explore the Erbil Citadel, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a glimpse into centuries of history and an opportunity to shop for souvenirs.
- If you arrive early we visit Erbil’s Bazaar as well today and search through the bazaar for local treasures.
- Overnight in Erbil.
Day 2 – Lalish – Mar Mattai – Duhok
- We embark on a two-hour drive to Lalish, the holiest town for the Yazidi people.
- Highlight: Discover Lalish, a town steeped in spirituality, where a few remaining families maintain the holy site, awaiting the return of Yazidi refugees from across the globe.
- Visit Mar Mattai (St. Matthew Monastery), the oldest Christian monastery in Iraq, perched on Mt. Alfaf and dating back to 363 AD, which has survived centuries of war and turmoil.
- We continue to Duhok, a town rooted in Yazidi history and culture. On the way, enjoy a traditional Kurdish lunch at a local restaurant.
- Overnight in Duhok.
Day 3 – Amedi – Barzan – Shanidar cave – Rawanduz
- Drive to Amadiya (Amedi), known as the “City of the Sky” because is perched atop a plateau.
- Visit the Barzani Genocide Memorial.
- Stop at Shanidar Cave, an ancient archaeological site.
- Highlight: Explore the cave’s fascinating history and take in the natural beauty of this historic site.
- Walking tour of Rawanduz.
- Overnight in Rawanduz.
Day 4 – Hamilton Road – Dokan – Slemani
- We will visit the waterfalls in one of the deepest gorges in the Middle East, then take the scenic Hamilton Road.
- Highlight: Admire the amazing landscapes along this historical road, built in the 1930s to unify the region.
- We stop for lunch in Dokan.
- Explore Sulaymaniyah, including its parks and bazaar, and experience the vibrant street food scene for dinner.
- Overnight in Sulaymaniyah.
Day 5 – Halabja – Goizha Mountain
- Visit the Red House Prison (Amna Suraka), a former prison used by Saddam’s regime.
- Explore the chilling history of this site, including exhibitions dedicated to the war against ISIS.
- Drive to Halabja, the site of the tragic chemical attack by Saddam’s regime in 1988 that killed thousands.
- Visit the Halabja Museum and pay your respects at shrines dedicated to the victims.
- If time permits, head up to Goizha Mountain for a stunning view of Sulaymaniyah at sunset.
- Overnight in Sulaymaniyah.
Day 6 – Koya – Erbil
- Highlight: Explore the Koya Fortress and the Caravanserai, remnants of the Ottoman era.
- Return to Erbil by car.
- If you haven’t visited the citadel and bazaar on the first day, we can do it now.
- Farewell dinner followed by a lively night out.
- Overnight in Erbil.
Day 7 – Erbil
- Airport drop off.
- End of tour.
