Itinerary
Day 1 – Friday – N’djamena
Arrival in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, located on the banks of the Chari River. where our team will meet you at the airport for the transfer to the hotel.
Overnight stay in a hotel in N’Djamena.
Day 2 – Saturday – N’djamena
This morning, we meet in the hotel lobby for a short tour briefing before heading out to explore one of Central Africa’s least-visited capitals.
We begin at the National Museum, home to archaeological finds from the ancient Sao civilization and exhibits highlighting Chad’s many ethnic groups and nomadic cultures. From here, we continue through the city centre, passing Independence Square and the Monument de la Nation.
Visit the impressive Grand Mosque of N’Djamena and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, two of the city’s most important religious landmarks reflecting Chad’s cultural diversity.
Later, we explore the bustling Central Market, where traders, tailors and merchants from across the country come together. We also stop at the Artisanal Centre, one of the best places in Chad to find handmade jewellery, leatherwork and traditional crafts.
Overnight stay in a hotel in N’Djamena.
Day 3 – Sunday – N’djamena – Durbali
After an early breakfast, we leave N’Djamena and begin our journey east into the Sahel. The scenery slowly changes from busy city streets to vast open plains dotted with acacia trees, cattle herds and temporary nomadic encampments.
As we travel deeper into rural Chad, encounters with Fulani, Arab and Wodaabe communities become increasingly common. This overland journey offers a rare glimpse into one of the last regions in Africa where nomadic traditions still strongly shape everyday life.
Arrive at the Wodaabe camps in the wider Durbali region, where clans gather at the end of the rainy season for the Guerewol ceremonies.
The exact festival location changes every year depending on rainfall, grazing conditions and agreements between the different clans. Flexibility and patience are therefore an essential part of the experience and part of what makes the Guerewol so unique.
Overnight stay in our camp near the Wodaabe camps.
Day 4 – Monday – Durbali – Guerewol Festival
Today we immerse ourselves in the Guerewol Festival, one of the Sahel’s most remarkable cultural gatherings. For the Wodaabe people, the festival is an important moment where dispersed nomadic communities reconnect after months of travelling with their cattle across the region.
Throughout the day, young Wodaabe men carefully prepare for the famous Yaake dances. Faces are painted with natural pigments, elaborate jewellery is worn and ostrich feathers are added to colourful headdresses. During the ceremonies, participants dance for hours while emphasizing facial expressions, eye movements and smiles, all important elements in traditional Wodaabe ideals of beauty.
Experience the Yaake dances up close and spend time among the Wodaabe camps as the festival grounds come alive with singing, dancing and ceremonies.
Beyond the dancing, there will be opportunities to explore the camps, interact respectfully with local families and gain a deeper understanding of nomadic life in the Sahel.
Overnight stay in our camp near the Wodaabe camps.
Day 5 – Tuesday – Durbali – Guerewol Festival
We spend another full day at the festival, allowing time to experience different ceremonies and quieter moments away from the main performances. Beyond the dancing itself, the experience is also about observing daily nomadic life in the Sahel.
Visit the camps during the day to see preparations for the ceremonies, traditional tea gatherings and herders returning with cattle before the evening festivities begin again.
Watch the atmosphere transform from peaceful daytime camp life into energetic evening performances beneath the Sahelian sky. As night falls, the dancing and singing often continue late into the evening, creating a unique atmosphere rarely experienced by outsiders.
Overnight stay in our camp near the Wodaabe camps.
Day 6 – Wednesday – Durbali – N’djamena
In the morning, we say farewell to our Wodaabe hosts before starting the long drive back across the Sahel towards N’Djamena.
The return journey offers another opportunity to appreciate the vast landscapes of Chad, one of Africa’s most remote and least explored countries. Depending on road conditions and local activity, we may stop at small villages or nomadic camps along the way.
Arrival back in N’Djamena in the late afternoon.
Overnight stay in a hotel in N’Djamena.
Day 7 – Thursday – N’djamena
Transfer to the airport for your international departure.
End of tour.
