Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Luanda

Arrive in Luanda, Angola’s lively capital on the Atlantic coast. Meet your local guide at the airport and transfer to your hotel. After settling in, begin exploring the fascinating mix of colonial history and modern energy that defines this city.

Visit the Fortaleza de São Miguel, a 16th-century fortress built by the Portuguese and now home to the Army Museum. Its walls are decorated with striking socialist-style murals that tell stories of Angola’s past conflicts and independence struggle.

Continue to the mysterious Iron Palace (Palácio de Ferro), believed by many to have been designed by Gustave Eiffel. Explore the graceful Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, one of Luanda’s oldest churches, before visiting the monumental Mausoleum of Dr António Agostinho Neto, Angola’s first president. End the day at 1 May Square, a vibrant meeting point surrounded by colonial-era façades and palm trees.

Overnight stay in a hotel in Luanda.

Day 2 – Muxima – Luanda

Leave the city behind for a day trip to Muxima, a peaceful riverside town steeped in colonial history. Visit the Muxima Fortress, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century to guard the Kwanza River trade route. The nearby church is still a pilgrimage site today, visited by thousands of Angolans each year.

Stop along the mighty Kwanza River, the longest river in Angola, and enjoy its calm scenery as fishermen pass by in wooden boats.

Return to Luanda and head to Mercado do 30, the city’s largest and most colourful market. Here, endless rows of stalls sell everything from handmade crafts to electronics, an energetic glimpse into daily life.

Overnight stay in a hotel in Luanda.

Day 3 – Luanda – Kissama National Park

This morning we venture about 1.5 hours south of the city to Kissama National Park, Angola’s flagship wildlife reserve. Once heavily affected by the civil war, the park has been successfully restocked through the Operation Noah’s Ark conservation project.

Set out on a safari drive to look for elephants, antelope, wildebeest, and a wide variety of birdlife. A boat trip along the Kwanza River offers a different perspective on the park’s untouched landscapes of savanna and mangroves.

Highlight: On the way back to Luanda, stop at the Moon Viewpoint (Miradouro da Lua), where layers of eroded cliffs create a surreal lunar landscape. Visit the Slavery Museum, located in a former chapel where enslaved Africans were once baptised, and finish the day at the lively souvenir market or with a stroll along the Ilha de Luanda, a narrow sandbar lined with beaches and cafés.
